Die Another Day

Today I saw the latest Bond movie, Die Another Day. I absolutely adore Bond movies, and like Asterix comics, I love enjoying them again and again. I think I can consider myself to be a Bond fan. This movie has completely messed up my holidays

What sucks

• The opening scene. If I remember correctly, this is the only Bond movie, when the opening scene happens during night. Really bad visuals. You think it is going to get better and you are awarded with Madonna’s theme song.
• The theme song. Ouch! Horrible. I generally like Bond theme songs, but this one will put the music coming out of a leaky balloon to shame.
• Halle Berry and her CIA boss. I usually like Berry, but in this, I’ve no idea what she is trying to do. Making an appearance like Ursula Andres just doesn’t cut it. The CIA guy is very annoying.
• Initial part of the movie is a Korean guy trying to act like a British guy. Last half consists mainly of a British guy trying to act like a Korean guy. Miserable.
• Direction. This looks like some of the martial arts movies. Cheap tricks like step-forward shots when people are killed. Come on folks, this is Bond. Have class, not crap.
• Madonna’s brief (thank you!) appearance and attempted humour - “I don’t enjoy cock fights”.
• The humour. There seems to be an overwhelming influence of really cheap comedy, especially in the ending scene. This is not at all like the subtle British humour that used to be a great factor in old Bond movies.
• Locations. I lost interest after a while because the whole movie is in North Korea (supposedly) and in Iceland. Iceland is beautiful, but there is simply not enough there to catch your attention for 60 minutes in a Bond movie.
• A slow story line. I actually felt sleepy once or twice.

What rocks

The movie has some finer aspects after all. Here they are, in my order of preference.

1. The Aston Martin Vanquish. This is a very sexy and stylish looking car that looks great from all angles. Good for Bond. BMW’s new models are getting really ugly. I can’t imagine Bond driving an Audi (not muscular enough) or a Mercedes (too much like an old man’s car).
2. Rosamund Pike. She is suave, elegant and classy. Decent acting too, though the movie doesn’t really call for it.
3. The great Judy Dench.
4. Pierce Brosnan. The guy seems to be aging backwards. His acting seems a bit backwards at times too.

1. Rosamund Pike is beautiful and I love her. She was the best in this movie.
