Omni Important

Do you mark all mails you send as "Important"? Don't!

So far, CC: soup used to be my only pet peeve about (lack of) professional e-mail etiquette. I got another one that has been bugging me for a while. Marking every message as "Very Important".

On an average, I get around 120 mails that needs my attention, every day. This is after I spend some time to identify and delete spam that averages to around 80 mails per day. This means, looking for e-mail is already a tiring activity. Reading stuff off a monitor is still lot more tiring than reading from paper.

With that background, consider how you would feel if people mark every damn e-mail as Important? After a while, this quickly evaporates any enthusiasm the reader might’ve had for e-mails marked thus.

Aaaaaarghhhhhh :-(

  1. You need SpamAssassin!! :)

My admin installed it last week on my mail server and my spam quota has gone down from 50+/day to about 2(or less)/day. I'm loving it.

Oh, and I don't think I've ever used that importance ranking for emails.

  2. IMPORTANT!!! VERY IMPORTANT!!!

I've seen aliens, they're out there. Posed like real management, they assume identities and then treat you like crap.
