Dual-boot PCs

Apparently Microsoft has exclusive OEM deals that prevent manufacturers from installing other OS in PCs into which they install Windows. I think computing industry might benefit from deregulation in a practical sense. Manufacturers are free to install whatever OS they want (also sell it with no OS) and popular shops are able to sell these. Democratic governments specify they need to get a choice in OS when they buy machines with tax payer’s money. I think countries like India and China should explore open source - as a matter of security too - for their governmental agencies. Make a technical committee that reviews the source code, adjust it if need be (language customizations to start with), share it back with the community, ask hardware vendors to install this certified OS as part of the deal.

I’m on the lookout for a new PC, but I don’t want to get Windows XP (too early to adopt). Something with Linux pre-installed will be ideal, followed by a no-OS machine, followed by Windows2000. Well, I could not find many choices in today’s market. I work in the IT industry and am aware of nice and bad things about Linux and XP, so think about how a normal user will be able to even realise what choices are out there?

- Walmart is selling PCs with no OS installed from $399 onwards. Also see the Google groups discussion. Though these PCs are not the ideal ones, they are pretty much all what you can get these days from a respectable shop. The Register reported it as well.
- Buy Pogo.com has excellent machines with Linux or dual-boot

If anybody out there knows some other options for a home user, please comment.
