Weekend’s Washington Post Magazine has an article about a diehard television resister who worked with a Professor of Television (well, the title is not that) to see if he is missing something by not watching TV.
It is worth reading.
I’ve not subscribed to cable yet. I get around 10 channels. Entertainment channels are UPN, NBC, FOX, ABC, CBS and WB. All suck. Worst experience is to watch a 1.5 hour movie on ABC where it runs to 3 hours - 5 minutes movie, 10 minutes ads. FOX is awash with reality shows - saw the ad for an upcoming one, Bridezillas. Less said about the news magazines in these shows, the better. eg:Sensational Breaking News at FOX could be the breakage of a water pipe in a county. The reporter goes on site, interviews pedestrians - who, like most people here won’t miss a chance to curse, praise and predict the weather - and makes a conclusion on when it is going to be repaired.
Cable would bring in additional 90 channels. I can’t take any more of this crap
The shows I watch include The Simpsons, Seinfeld, That 70’s Show, Saturday Night Live and Smallville. Stuff I really like are As Time Goes By, Motorweek, BBC News and Globetrekker; all on WETA - a public broadcasting station.
There are two gadgets I hate in this world., viz., Television and Telephone. May be it was because I grew up in rural India. I saw a Television set (B&W) when I was 13. My parents bought a TV when I was 16. I had seen telephones before. We got one at home when I was 20.
