Slashdot is running a story on Palladium, which, in my opinion, has absolutely zero value to customers. It is in fact very much against the spirit of competition and innovation. It doesn’t solve any problem for me, if I pay to buy a PC equipped with it. It in fact takes out my right to do as I please with the equipment I bought, even if I don’t have any harmful intentions to others.
I see it as just a ploy to apply tight squeeze on monopolies and even kill licenses like GPL and volunteer innovation.
Though I admire Sony’s engineering and their products, this kind of attitude has made me completely switch from buying Sony products. Their products look so good (except VAIO desktops), with great fit and finish, but stupid ideas like proprietary hooks on PlayStation2 and other products that only serve their parts manufacturing operation is not the right attitude.
