I agree with him completely - you can’t afford to have specialization in the IT field. Flexibility to move from one technology/paradigm to another is really a must. Most of the time, I’ve seen that people with UNIX and command-line background are more flexible than people familiar only with Microsoft platforms. Common complaint? "We can’t work without our GUI and mouse. We can’t type in a command!"

He rightly says that an SME web master should fill in the following roles and should be comfortable with the associated technologies.

* Webmaster - (X)HTML, XML, HTTP, FTP, SSL, CMS
* Database Guy - SQL, database design, disaster recovery
* Systems Guy - Linux, NT, IIS, Apache, cron, backups
* Programmer - PHP, Perl, Javascript, shell scripting
* Web Designer - SMIL, CSS, HTML, JPEG, file compression, WAI
* Project Manager - statistical analysis, logging, reporting, documentation, technical writing

Hmmm... I feel pretty good that I’m familiar with all of these, in addition to Oracle Designer and Developer, PL/SQL, C, Python, Zope, XML-RPC, ASP etc.

Anyone wants to offer me a job? I’m not much interested in being a webmaster whose job most of the time is to fix broken link and text. If you are looking for some one with enterprise data experience and some one who really would like to make integrated systems out of your existing and future systems, I think I can help you.
