Start menu annoyances

This morning I was in the process of upgrading several pieces of software on my Windows 98 machine at work. One thing I noticed is that every damn vendor now prefix their start-menu entries with their corporate name. This makes it a lot more difficult to search the start menu - we all read English from left to right! Needless to say the entries are much longer than they need to be. Most of the time, I don’t look for programs by vendor name, but by functional name.

Take a look:

- Microsoft Word
- Microsoft Excel
- Microsoft Access
- Microsoft PowerPoint
- Activestate ActivePython
- Activestate ActiveTcl
- Activestate ActivePerl

When it comes to start menu, nobody comes close to Oracle. I love their products, but by the time I install Designer, Developer and Client libraries, they put so many things on my start menu (and every single entry starts with "Oracle"). Why can’t they make one folder called "Oracle" and put all their short cuts WITHOUT prefixing with "Oracle" inside that?

Anyway, that is what I end up doing after all!
