Dave Barry on planning a birthday party for your 2-year-old child. As usual, he is hilarious. This time, he nails the topic right on the head. For whom are these parties? Parents or kids?

Most of these baby-birthday affairs are nothing but an opportunities for gossip, ladies showing off their culinary skills, men showing off their latest toys and jobs etc. When babies finally get into the picture, it is usually like pets - they are asked to perform wonderful things like singing a song in languages nobody knows. Personally, I think this is as demeaning to them as it is to pets.

What would be a good birthday party? Take the child out to the zoo or to any place where s/he can begin to appreciate nature and what is wonderful in this world. Then have a small party, preferably in the evening, before their bed time where they get to play with other kids without their competing parents present.
