A lemon law for software

The Economist - "If Microsoft made cars instead of computer programs, product-liability suits might by now have driven it out of business. Should software makers be made more accountable for damage caused by faulty programs?"

A very valid idea. Not only for Microsoft, but also for all software vendors. Just let me know if you find any other industry where you pay hundreds of dollars for a product and before using you’ve to accept an agreement that effectively says the vendor has no responsibility at all? And for critical bug fixes, you pay more as upgrade costs - these should be similar to product recalls in the automotive industry.

  1. Yes, it is time for a lemon law to protect us from wasting hundreds and thousands of dollars on useless software. Companies are taking advantage! It is reasonable to expect some mistakes, but when bugs render a program completely unusable, a company should be obligated to refund one's money. I just had an awful experience, calling tech support for one voice recognition product every few days for a month to report problems. I tried every fix they suggested, and even asked if I could return the product -- but they ignored my request and just gave me something else to try. After one month, when I still had problems -- they directed me to a pay-per-call service, because, "unfortunately," my free tech support service was up. When I called customer service to complain, she named my operating system, saying, "Oh, you must be on [my OS]." So they know of the problem and are willing to profit from it. This should have been a recall. I've been told I can *try* to return the product, but that it may be sent back to me at my expense.Appalling!! Time to get these guys in line.
