BitTorrent

Python and MIT solves file distribution blues.

BitTorrent is free software written in Python for distributing large files in a scalable, reliable, bandwidth efficient way. It is also designed to handle surge in requests. “The key to cheap file distribution is to tap the unutilized upload capacity of your customers. It’s free. Their contribution grows at the same rate as their demand, creating limitless scalability for a fixed cost.”

Looks like MIT’s implementation of Gnutella for a legal and noble purpose :-) It was discussed in Slashdot in March 2002.

via Advogato’s quick file distribution challenge. Check out the Advogato article too. Several interesting solutions are presented.

  1. I love bittorrent. I use it to download all my favorite tv shows. Thanx MIT and python! You're the best!
