Nagios (formerly NetSaint) is a really good *NIX based system monitoring, alerting and reporting tool.
It has pretty good documentation too. ONLamp.com has a decent article on installing Nagios.
Looks like it is a good tool to know.
One of my colleagues wrote: "You should also take a look at OpenNMS - http://www.opennms.org/ which is an open source network monitoring package that can do many of the same things as NetSaint, although it's more SNMP oriented than service oriented..."
