The Namesake

Of the recent books (written by Indian authors) I've read, this was the only one I didn't have to persuade Babu to read and quite frankly, wasn't surprised to see him finish.

The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri is not a very sensational book or a thrilling page turner but there is something about the book which doesn't let you put it down. Ms. Lahiri dramatizes the immigrant experience in a simple yet profound way that makes you forget that you're reading. The simple and direct eloquence of her language brings the characters to life, almost to the extent that you feel involved in the story yourself.

Over all, this book is a good read. It reminds you of the pleasure a simple hobby like reading can provide. However, if you're one to look for serious plots, this book is definitely not for you.
